AI SEO (GEO and AEO) for Pittsburgh Businesses
AI SEO, also called generative engine optimization or answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your business named and cited when people ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or Copilot for a recommendation. We do it for Pittsburgh businesses and measure it every month across all five platforms.

Why AI search skips your business.

The answer names three competitors and not you
A homeowner types "best roofer in the North Hills" into ChatGPT instead of Google. It answers with three names and a sentence about each. If you are not one of the three, the customer never sees you, never visits your site, and never calls. There is no page two in an AI answer.
Your site never says what you do in plain words
AI engines pull from pages that state facts directly: who you are, what you do, where, for whom, with what results. A site built on slogans and hero images gives them nothing to quote. Competitors with a clear, factual page get lifted into the answer instead.
The web disagrees about your business
Your hours say one thing on Google, another on Yelp, and your old address is still on three directories. AI engines check sources against each other before they trust one. Every mismatch lowers the chance they name you at all.
Nobody is measuring it
Rankings show up in a rank tracker. AI answers do not, so most businesses have no idea whether they appear in them, how often, or what the engines say about them. You cannot fix a number you have never seen.
Overview
What generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) include.
AI engines decide whom to recommend from three things: what your website says, what the rest of the web says about you, and whether the two agree. We make your site the clearest source on the internet about your business, line up every outside listing to match it, and build the entity data (schema, Wikidata, directory profiles) that lets ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode connect the dots. Then we track 60 or more real prompts every month, so you see exactly where you appear and where you still do not. Our own agency ranks second of 254 Pittsburgh marketing agencies in AI answer share, measured this way.
AI SEO is the newest part of search, and for a local business it may become the most important one. A growing share of people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode for a recommendation instead of scanning ten blue links. The answer they get names a handful of businesses and moves on. Being one of those names is the whole game, and it is won on different signals than a page-one ranking.
The engines are not reading keywords. They are looking for an entity they trust: a business whose website states plainly what it does and where, whose details match on every listing across the web, whose credentials are verifiable, and whose content answers the questions people actually ask. When those pieces line up, an engine can cite you with confidence. When they do not, it cites someone whose pieces do.
We start by measuring, because almost nobody has. Sixty or more real prompts, the ones your customers would type, run through five AI platforms. The result shows which questions name you, which name a competitor, and what the engines say when they do. That becomes the plan. Our own agency went through the same process and ranks second of 254 Pittsburgh marketing agencies in AI answer share, so you can see what it looks like before you commit to it.
Then we fix the foundation: complete and connected schema, a Wikidata entity, directory and profile alignment, crawler access for every major AI bot, and an llms.txt that describes your business in one place. Most of it is invisible to visitors. All of it is visible to the engines. Our AI crawler and llms.txt checklist walks through the technical half if you want to see the work.
Content comes next, and it is the same discipline as good SEO: a plain definition under every heading, question-form FAQs with complete answers, and articles aimed at the questions where the engines currently name someone else. Local proof carries weight here. A sentence like “a North Hills roofer with 8.6x the leads since 2023” gets quoted; “results-driven solutions” does not.
Everything is re-measured monthly, and the report is in plain English: where you appeared, where you did not, what changed, what we are doing next. AI answers move faster than rankings, so this is ongoing work. Done consistently, it compounds the same way the map pack does, and the businesses that start now will be the ones the engines already trust when everyone else catches up.
What you get
Six things every engagement includes. In writing.
Most agencies list deliverables in the pitch and lose them in the contract. We put the spec on paper before you sign anything, and nothing on it costs extra.

AI visibility baseline
Before anything changes, we measure. Sixty or more real prompts a customer might type, run through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode. You get a share-of-voice number, a list of competitors the engines name instead of you, and the exact questions where you are missing.
Entity build-out
AI engines recognize businesses as entities, not keywords. We complete and connect yours: Organization, LocalBusiness and Person schema with every credential, membership and location, linked to your Google Business Profile, Wikidata, BBB, chamber and directory profiles so the engines see one consistent business everywhere.
Answer-first content
Each service and location page opens with a plain definition and the facts an engine can lift whole: what, where, for whom, with what proof. Questions customers actually ask become headings with complete answers under them. No rewrite of your voice, just the structure engines quote from.
Citation and listing alignment
Name, address, phone, hours, categories and description made identical across Google, Bing Places, Apple, Yelp, BBB, industry directories and the aggregators. Consistency is the single biggest trust signal an AI engine uses when deciding whether to name you.
Crawler access and llms.txt
We make sure GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google's AI crawlers can reach your site, publish an llms.txt and llms-full.txt that describe your business and content in one place, and keep sitemaps and dates honest so engines treat your pages as current.
Monthly prompt tracking
The same prompts, re-run every month across all five platforms. You see visibility by platform, by topic and by question, sentiment of what the engines say, and your share of voice against named competitors. Changes get made based on what moved.
We measure where you stand
A baseline across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode, plus an audit of your site, schema, listings and crawler access. You see the gaps before we touch anything.

We fix the facts
Schema, entity links, listing alignment, crawler access and the plain-language definitions each page needs. This is the groundwork that lets an engine trust and quote you.

We build what engines cite
Answer-first service pages, question-form FAQs with real answers, and articles aimed at the questions where the engines currently name someone else.

We track and adjust
Monthly prompt runs, a plain report on what moved, and changes based on it. AI answers shift faster than rankings do, so this is ongoing work, not a one-time setup.

Who we build for
AI SEO matters most for businesses people ask about by recommendation: contractors, roofers, movers, home services, healthcare practices, attorneys, real estate agents and local shops across Pittsburgh. If a customer might ask an AI "who should I call for this," we can measure whether it says you.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we hear most.
What is AI SEO? Is it the same as GEO and AEO?
AI SEO is the work of getting a business named, cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. It is also called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). Where traditional SEO earns a blue link on a results page, AI SEO earns a mention in the answer itself.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of getting your business and content selected and cited by generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot when they write an answer. The term comes from a 2023 Princeton study and is the one most agencies use. In practice it means clear factual pages, complete entity data, consistent listings across the web, and content that answers real questions, then measuring which prompts name you.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the older name for the same goal, from the era of voice assistants and featured snippets: structure your content so an answer engine can lift a direct answer from it. Today AEO usually refers to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode plus voice results, while GEO refers to standalone AI chat tools. We treat them as one discipline, because the engines read the same signals.
How is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
Regular SEO is about ranking pages for keywords. AI SEO is about being a trusted, consistent entity whose facts an engine can quote. The two overlap heavily: fast pages, clear structure and real authority help both. The differences are the emphasis on schema and entity data, on plain factual statements the engine can lift, on agreement between your site and every outside listing, and on measuring prompts instead of rankings.
How do you measure AI visibility?
We run a fixed set of real prompts, usually 60 or more, through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode every month and record whether your business is named, where in the answer, what is said about it, and which competitors appear instead. That produces a visibility score, a share-of-voice ranking and a sentiment score you can watch over time.
Does AI SEO replace Google SEO?
No. Google still sends most website traffic, and Google's own AI features draw on the same signals as its regular results. AI SEO sits on top of a sound SEO foundation. If your site is slow, thin or inconsistent, we fix that first, because the engines will not quote it either way.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Entity and listing fixes can show results in a few weeks because the engines refresh their sources often. Winning new prompts where a competitor is already named usually takes a few months of content and consistency work. We report monthly so you can see the movement as it happens.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No one can, and anyone who promises it is guessing. The engines change weekly. What we can do is measure honestly, fix every signal they are known to use, and show you the trend each month.
How much does AI SEO cost?
It depends on how many services and locations you want tracked and how much of the foundation already exists. Many clients add it to an existing SEO program. We scope it after a conversation and a baseline measurement, so the proposal reflects your actual gaps.
Do you do this for your own agency?
Yes. Pittsburgh Digital Marketing Agency is tracked the same way, across 65 prompts and five platforms. As of October 2026 we rank second of 254 Pittsburgh marketing agencies in AI answer share. Everything on this page is what we did to get there.
